Signs a Mole May Need to Be Removed

Minor changes can be easy to miss or overlook, yet they may indicate something more serious. Knowing how to spot the warning signs can help you take action early and protect your skin health.

At Stone Oak Dermatology in San Antonio, TX, patients benefit from the expertise of Dr. Linda J. Banta, a board-certified dermatologist with decades of experience in both medical and surgical dermatology. She and her team carefully evaluate your skin and recommend effective, individualized treatments.

Common Signs a Mole May Need Removal

While many moles are harmless, certain changes should not be ignored. Dermatologists often use the “ABCDE” rule as a guide:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole looks different from the other.
  • Border: Edges are irregular, blurred, or uneven.
  • Color: Multiple shades or uneven coloring appear within the mole.
  • Diameter: The mole is larger than 6mm (roughly the size of a pencil eraser).
  • Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or texture that develop over time.

Monitoring these changes can help you identify early signs of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Other Warning Signs to Watch For

Beyond the ABCDEs, there are additional symptoms that may indicate a need for mole removal:

  • Itching, tenderness, or pain
  • Bleeding or oozing
  • A mole that suddenly becomes raised or develops a crust
  • A spot that looks noticeably different from your other moles (the “ugly duckling” sign)

If you observe any of these changes, it’s important to have the mole evaluated by a dermatology professional.

What Happens During Mole Removal?

Mole removal is typically a quick, in-office procedure. Depending on the mole’s size, location, and appearance, your provider may use one of the following methods:

  • Shave removal: The mole is carefully shaved off the skin’s surface
  • Excisional removal: The mole and a small margin of surrounding tissue are removed

Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable, and there’s little to no downtime. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
