About Psoriasis and Dandruff
Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes skin cells to build up too quickly. It may lead to thick, scaly patches, itching, redness, flaking, or discomfort.
Dandruff is a common scalp issue characterized by flaking and itching. It is often linked to oiliness, irritation, dry skin, or a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis.
Do You Have Psoriasis or Dandruff?
It’s not always easy to tell if your symptoms are from psoriasis or dandruff (or possibly both). Here are five factors to consider.
1. Type of Flakes
Dandruff often causes loose white or yellowish flakes that fall from the scalp into the hair or onto clothing.
Scalp psoriasis is associated with thicker, drier scales. These scales may look silvery-white, gray, or crusted, depending on your skin tone. They may also feel stuck in place.
2. Raised Patches
One of the biggest signs of scalp psoriasis is the presence of raised plaques. These are thickened patches of inflamed skin covered with scale.
Dandruff usually does not cause dense plaques. The scalp often feels less built up than it does with psoriasis.
3. Symptoms Spread Beyond the Hairline
Scalp psoriasis can extend past the hairline onto the forehead, neck, or behind the ears.
Dandruff is usually more limited to the scalp, though seborrheic dermatitis may also affect oily areas such as the eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, or chest.
4. Itching and Soreness
Both conditions can itch. However, scalp psoriasis may also cause burning, soreness, tightness, or discomfort when brushing or styling hair.
Scratching can make either issue worse. It may also lead to bleeding, irritation, or temporary hair shedding from inflammation or friction.
5. Scalp Response to Over-the-Counter Shampoo
Many mild dandruff cases improve with regular use of medicated shampoos. If flakes, itching, or plaques continue despite consistent at-home care, it may be time for an exam.
A dermatologist can check for scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, fungal infection, allergic reactions, and other causes of irritation.
